Vista connecting to Win XP printer, Vista Weirdness

One would think, after all this time, that if you have a “shared” printer on Win XP that you can see with Vista (in my case Vista 64 home premium) (HP-970 cxi printer) that you should just click on it and connect and print….

oh contraire! one must define a new local port and then install the printer as follows….Create new port, “local port”, then Vista asks “port name”. In  “port name”  “\\my computer name(where my printer is installed)\printer name”.  Solution found here. (http://forums.techguy.org).

So there is yet one more Vista wierdness…..

Got Ganymede RC4 with Birt Running on Win xp sp3

As I thought might be the case my problems seem to have been due to massive user error. The key is that one must start a project before trying to set anything else up, and.. The BIRT package comes with its own version of data explorer that is not the same as the main Eclipse DTP. I sill have not gotten the data tools platform (DTP) working with My Mysql database. I did get a sample report going with MY mysql database. so that is a start. For help on this if you are as confused as I was, and to some extent still am see the screen shots from me and the from the great help from an Actuate master (BIRT developer). see the bug 236647 (in Bugzilla) for some useful info for the total newbie!

So a key that I don’t think is highlighted in Eclipse Docs is that you must have STARTED A PROJECT, before anything else works properly, makes sense since it uses the project workspace to store all environment info…

If any one has an idea how or where one should put the MYSQL driver into the Eclipse environment so that it will work with the DTP I’d appreciate it! Currently I just get the “can’t find it” message even though it is displayed in the Jar file tab…(and I did set up another project to test it)

I’m still drinking through a fire hose trying to learn Eclipse, MYSQL, and JAVA all at once,(along with BIRT and probably a few other items)

Installing Eclipse Ganymede on Win XP sp3

Eclipse looks to be a very powerful and well supported software development environment, with huge capability, if I can get it running!

Well…Since for the time being I bombed out on my Linux installation I thought I’d try the win Xp install. I chose the “Ganymede RC3” Report writer package. Every thing seemed to go very smoothly. Then I tried to get my My SQL database hooked up using the JDBC driver… At first I though I had it, the server pinged and indicated that it was connected.. But then I went to look for “data” the server it turns out should have shown up on the navigator with the various databases, so a “data source could be defined,,, These things never happened,. Left some messages on the Newsgroup. Got asked to file a bug report, I did, It’s Bug 236647 In Bugzilla. The first response has been that they tried it and everything works great… So again I’m at a dead end with even being able to get a fairly good starting point with Eclipse. What I don’t get is why it has such an extensive error log when I do a clean install.. It looks like ti is trying to install a bunch of other items not in the installed package,,, It makes getting useful error messages hard to distinguish from the noise.

It should not be this difficult to get a tool installed and working… I’ll even grant that it is probably “user error” but Still!!! Give me something to go on!!!

It’s pretty clear that I have to get this working but I’m not sure what’s next. I’ll have to give them a few days to see if Eclipse people can help me out. I have to get some real work done anyway!

When I get a chance I’ll update getting MYSQL going. I found a neat tool HeidiSQL looks to be much more complete and free than the mysql workbench.

Installing Ubuntu in Dual boot with Win xp Your mileage may vary!

Well this is a bit out of order… but I decided to try out Ubuntu on my main machine, I currently lack “extra” machines… My main machine is a Dell Optiplex 1.8 ghx intel 1 gb memory and with 200gb on the main disk and a second drive. So I figured I’d Just install Ubuntu on the extra 40 gb disk I had on the system, what windows knows as my F drive.. I tried doing this via the Ubuntu standard iso distribution disk disk. The install appeared to go great and the dual boot screen from Grub came up.. but there it stopped,,, no way that I could figure could make the system load., so, I tried both the straight install and the wubi install, which installs under windows…Same result, I could see the installation but the Grub loader could not get me going… After backing everything back off (remember this is my primary machine!) I gritted my teeth, made sure I had enough space on “c” and tied the “Wubi” install on “C” and shortly I was off and running… would still prefer to get things on the other disk but I’ll have some learning to do to figure that out. I’m sure it should be able to be done but the installation lies.. The installer cannot do it sucessfully. So manual editing must be done, but where? (reader input welcome!)

One other oddity, when I had a power failure on Win Xp (thunderstorm) I decided to use the opportunity to go to Ubuntu… it was a no go on several attempts, got to what was called the busy box, well that did not help me any! I discovered that the condition is caused by Ubuntu not being able to intialize some hardware, don’t know what. but any how, if I booted Win Xp and then shut down normally, with power off Ubuntu started up fine. I guess some hardware state was cleared by Win XP. Hope this helps someone! I posted my issues on Launchpad, with little result but at least the info is there for developers…

Win Xp Sp3 “Access Denied”

Well…No posts or much useful work done yesterday. I decided to get my main machine up to date with XP SP3. After several hours or so I got an “Access Denied” message and the installation reversed itself for another few hours… This post provided the solution! See Http://fastest963windows.blogspot.com The site also has a number of fixes for other Sp3 problems. Be aware that the fix also fixed a number of niggling access issues I had not been able to figure out that had accumulated over time, and also the fix took about an hour or more to run…but then I’ve got a pretty packed 200GB disk and not terribly fast computer…

Anyhow after a day of work I’m on SP3 and a bunch of my issues have gone away, Xp is overall noticeably faster and most important Explorer is working much better, no more hangs.. but Google reader no longer displays my contacts when I try to send an article from reader.. It still works in Firefox, just fine…
