For widows users: 1st thing which is not obvious is that all the installation steps must be done from the command shell in windows (preferably in admin mode if on Vista), from the correct directory. You do not use the python idle environment, nor do you explicitly invoke python, (except at the very end!!)
You must have SVN and GIT installed and on your path (which the “normal” installations take care of) note that Tortoise SVN is not sufficient (It does not have the command line interface) Slik svn does http://www.sliksvn.com/en/download, both can co-exist, Tortoise Git http://code.google.com/p/tortoisegit/ is a good install for windows users and includes a complete tool set. The boot and install scripts depend and use these programs to install source code from many locations/libraries, really very cool…therefore you must have a good internet connection!!
You should probably execute the command shell with the “run as administrator” if using Vista, if xp you should be an administrator.
You do not need to do a checkout or download of any files other than the “pinax-boot.py” file, which should be placed in a directory that you want to use as your base installation directory.
a general outline of what happens…..
You run pinax-boot.py
It downloads the base Pinax repos and installation scripts.
You “activate” pinax-env
(it is really running in the command shell)
That changes your prompt. You will then do your directory changes within this new pinax-env prompt……
(this took a while for me to wrap my head around but I now agree that it’s a really neat good idea!!, I would not try without it)
pip install <<<this step processes a very long and involved script which gets numerous dependent/pre-requisite packages and places them properly in the “virtual-environment”
you remain in pinax-env all during this process….and following….
pinax-admin clone_project retrieves the proper stuff from the set of files that you have downloaded and sets up another directory containing just your project as a django project…
It is a good idea to go with the default sqllite db (ie. don’t touch settings!!)
Now follow the directions, again from within pinax-env,, and cd into your project directory and runserver.. You should get a nice pinax complaint about no db.. follow the instructions to syncdb and so on…

I’m configuring this all on Vista 64. Well I finally decided to begin the learning process. I elected to use only the “Ordinary” x86 versions and not 64 bit versions. I installed the latest Python, 2.61 which according to the Python site is the continuing line from the required 2.5 for app engine (Python 2.6.1 Windows installer (Windows binary — does not include source), this could cause problems later but so far so good. I ran the Python environment stand alone to ensure that is functioned.
I then followed the tutorial. Downloaded the app engine development environment. I ran the install. I also created the Helloworld folder in the documents folder and placed the trial Yaml and PY file inside the folder, as the tutorial required. Then tried to run the executable according to the tutorial. I could not figure out how to do that. I rebooted, always a good idea!
Then noticed that the Google App Engine had placed an Icon on the desktop. Clicking it did not result in anything other than a window that opened and closed too fast to see. Re-reading the getting started info it came clearer to me that I had to follow the format for invoking the App Engine and specifying the location of the helloword folder. So I opened up notepad++ and created this line, which I the entered into the Vista Search box (which I discovered also now functions as the “Run” box). >>> dev_appserver.py C:\Users\DadLaptop\Documents\Helloworld<<<
Bang, It worked!! Followed the rest of the tutorial to display “Hello World” on Localhost. Now I have to continue for the more advanced functions. Stay tuned!
I saved the command line as a .bat file and believe that I can edit the desktop icon to include the parameter for the location of the hellworld folder.

Just found a site “Find Open Source Alternatives to comercial Software”. Looks pretty good at 1st blush.
As posted earlier, I could not seem to get Acrobat 8 (latest patches) to print correctly from Access Yes I could print, after having followed Adobe’s debug script to re-run install/repair (from control panel) but only in black and white and without being able to specify file location or file replace…(program just hung)
About to give up, I installed some freeware, “bullzip printer” after a reboot, not specified in the documentation, it works like a charm, well it keeps defaulting to black and white but will do color when asked nicely and repetativley!
Why can’t Adobe get this right, they charge a premium price but support committment and bloat are going to kill them.
One would think, after all this time, that if you have a “shared” printer on Win XP that you can see with Vista (in my case Vista 64 home premium) (HP-970 cxi printer) that you should just click on it and connect and print….
oh contraire! one must define a new local port and then install the printer as follows….Create new port, “local port”, then Vista asks “port name”. In “port name” “\\my computer name(where my printer is installed)\printer name”. Solution found here. (http://forums.techguy.org).
So there is yet one more Vista wierdness…..
Well I thought I had it all together. The Adobe printer with Acrobat using Access cannot prompt for a file location, when I set that option the process hangs… If I leave it going to the default .Documents folder all runs ok.
But within Access the printer option dialog started appearing then disappearing depending on mouse (touchpad) operation,,,particularly when trying to set Acrobat printer options/ doesn’t give me a lot of confidence…I really don’t have that much time to devote to ironing all the tweeks out. So far Neither Microsoft not Adobe are offering to pay!
I had heard that Vista 64 was running regular Win 32 bit apps fine, Your mileage may vary!!! I don’t consider either Acrobat v8 nor Access v2003 to be terribly exotic!
Just got a new Gateway Laptop with Microsoft Vista 64 pre-installed. As I expected I did run into some weirdness. The system comes with two versions of internet explorer the regular 32 bit version and the 64 bit version. Seemed weird to me until I discovered that I could not download a patch that required the “genuine advantage feature” with the 64 bit version, no error just did not work…went to the 32 bit version worked like a charm, way to go Microsoft! You would think if they want to promote Vista-64 they would get all of the job done??
Next up was trying to get Acrobat professional working…(version 8.0 intially ) I use this regularly to “print” my reports and then combine hem for electronic distribution. Short result is that the straight install did not work. I then found that an update was required.. I installed it, still no joy, I then followed a trouble shooter script from the Adobe web site, so you can be assured I’m not the first to have the problem. In short It appears the running “update and repair” from the control panel add remove programs menu got it fixed. Note that I had previously done an Update to the same. That 1st update did not get the job done but the second, and a reboot did.
There were a few other small things not really worth mentioning. I hope that the system does not have as yet undiscovered issues, but it seems to be running some of my heavy duty Access 2003 files just fine, and 4x faster than my 1 gig 1.25 ghz dell desktop!
